Hyderabad: About 230 water tanks out of 337 maintained by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board are in bad shape resulting in about 20 per cent of the total 451 million gallons a day (MGD) going waste.

The Water Board has a huge task of maintaining 117 water tanks in the core city and 210 water tanks in peripheral areas under 16 divisions and 120 operation and maintenance sections.

Accepting that there was a leakage of about 20 per cent of drinking water every day, a senior official of the HMWS&SB told The Hans India that the leakage was mainly because of reservoirs as old as 30 years.

Despite having enough water to meet the demands of the citizens, the water board has been facing the problems on account of shortage of tanks to store water.

The official said that the HMWS&SB decided to conduct a comprehensive survey to find out where all leakages were taking place. He said it has also been decided to hire a third-party consultant to study about the condition of the existing tanks and their water holding capacity.

The consultants would inspect water tank structure, source of leakage and the number new tanks that would be required to meet the demands of the citizens. The consultants would submit the report by November end.
