Hyderabad: The state government has decided not to go ahead with the case pertaining to Indiramma housing scam which had sent chills down the spine of a few politicians about a year-and-a-half back.

Though the CID had submitted its report about 18 months back, there has been no progress in the matter. Top sources in the housing department claim that the government is of the opinion that it would not be possible to handle such a huge number of cases and it would not be practical to file charge-sheets which runs into over 3,000 names.

As a result, the government is understood to have decided not take the matter forward. It may be mentioned here that soon after the government came to power, it conducted a survey on Indiramma Housing scheme in about 593 houses and came to the conclusion that a major scam had taken place in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

It was suspected that apart from many politicians, village sarpanches, mandal and taluk-level government officials were involved in the scam. The CID, which was asked to take up the probe, even found out that construction did not even take off with regard to about 36,000 houses.

In several cases, the beneficiaries were not genuine. In some cases the existing houses of the local people were repaired and were shown as new construction in records.

People, who are not form the weaker section and who already owned houses, got benefited. Sources in CID said that despite repeated request, the engineers had not furnished them the information they had sought from the department concerned.

The CID wanted information about the quality of the material used for the houses under the scheme. The issue had rocked the state assembly. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and his Cabinet colleagues stated that the government would not spare anyone who was guilty in the case. This had created ripples both among politicians and officials.

A senior official said that if the CID strictly follows the rules then it would face difficulty in naming thousands of accused in the scam. It would also not be easy to file charge-sheets.
