Hyderabad: In what is termed as an awful situation, students belonging to below poverty line (BPL) have turned into daily wage labourers to continue their studies.

Thanks to the apathy of the State government which has not released grants for fee reimbursement and scholarships for the last couple of years.

Born in poverty-stricken families, Boini Anil, Nalla Anil and their half-a-dozen classmates, all belonging to Boinapally Mandal, studying BCom II Year in SRR College in Karimnagar, are left with no chance but to work as daily wage labourers as they did not receive scholarships since they joined the degree course.

Speaking to The Hans India, Boini Anil said: “At a time when eking out a living itself is difficult for our four-member family, it’s difficult to bear necessary expenses like books, monthly bus pass and others.

Against this backdrop I and some of my college-mates decided to work as daily wage labourers to continue our studies. The Gram Panchayat engaged us to dig trenches to lay pipeline and construct drains.”

“What I get is about Rs 300 a day. However, we don’t get to work every day, it’s enough to meet our college expenses,” he said, pouring out his family’s problems.

His parents who cultivated cotton in their one-and-a-half acre land ended up in losses owing to heavy rains this season that affected the yield.

When asked about the time management, Nalla Anil said they would begin work at around 2 pm after attending classes in Karimnagar. He said both his parents are daily wage labourers.

It is learnt that a majority of students are also working locally in various stores to reduce their studies burden on their parents.

In another case, a private engineering college management refused to give SSC certificate to K Madhav, who recently got MBA seat in JNTU Hyderabad, citing that his fee reimbursement was not yet paid by the government.

Under pressure to ensure his MBA admission, he had to submit a cheque for Rs 35,000 to the college management to get his certificate.

AISF National President Syed Valiulla Khadri of Warangal said: “The State government has left nearly 14 lakh students in the lurch by not clearing their tuition fee reimbursement dues.

The dues are about Rs 2,078 crore for 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years, including Rs 400 crore scholarships.”
