Hyderabad: The Telangana Government is tweaking the tourism policy and high on the agenda is safety. After the tragedy in Karnataka when two film stuntmen drowned in a lake during the shooting of a film, the government is taking no chances.

Sources said the government wants to promote water sports and boating is also making amendments to the policy to see that all safety measures are in place.

While the new tourism policy is keen to promote water tourism and project sites for shooting films, it is making it mandatory to seek permission from the irrigation department and water board.

It would also be mandatory to keep expert swimmers ready and those who are performing stunts should know how to swim.

The government has identified Nagarjuna Sagar, Kinnerasani project, Mid Manair reservoir, Kuntala waterfalls and major irrigation projects like Kaleswaram, Pranahita, Kalwakurti, Yellampally and Sriram Sagar stage -2 for promotion of film shootings and water tourism.

The proposal to introduce boating facility is also being reviewed in view of the Karnataka incident. The government has sought the advice of various organisations including police and fire brigade on safety measures to be taken up at all the reservoirs and across canals.

The officials have been asked to visit the project sites and give necessary safety measures that need to be taken at each project site.

The government also wants to promote paragliding and religious places as tourism destinations. For this plans are afoot to construct recreation clubs, boarding and residential facilities and food courts.

According to officials the number of tourists visiting the State has been increasing. Several tourist places are decked in greenery and water bodies are full as the state received copious rainfall this season.

The increase was seen more in domestic sector and there was need to attract more foreign tourists. Sources said that the domestic tourism has increased by about 20 per cent in 2016-17 compared to last year.
