Warangal Urban: Exposing the alleged security lapses existing at Warangal Central Prison two prisoners have escaped from the jail during early hours of Saturday much to the dismay of prison officials.
The prisoners managed to break out of three layered security of the prison guarded by armed personnel from four watch towers on the outer wall of the prison. Their escape method was similar to that under trial SIMI activists who ran away recently from Bhopal jail.
The incident which was said to have taken place at around 3.30 am has caused much sensation. The prison superintendent K Newton and other officials were alerted about the escape of the captives at around 4 am,following which the police were also alerted.
The fugitives were identified as 30 year old Rajesh Yadav hailing from Mubarakpur village of Arwal district of Bihar state and 27 year old Sainik Singh who belongs to Shadunagar of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh.
Rajesh Yadav was undergoing life imprisonment for committing a murder in Ranga Reddy district. Sainik Singh, who served as craftsmen in the army was facing five years sentence imposed on him following a court martial for stealing an AK-47 rifle, informed the police sources.
The duo made a rope of bed sheets tied with each other to scale up and slide down a 20 feet tall high security wall equipped with high voltage power fence, after successfully managing to sneak out of two inner security layers.
ACP SM Surendranath speaking to press persons informed that the escaped prisoners broke the lock of their barrack open using an iron rod. They tied the rod to rope of bed sheets and used it as a hook to get hold of the wall.
Rajesh Yadav and Sainik Singh were shifted to Warangal Central Prison on Oct 9 on administrative grounds. Following the incident the commissioner of police G Sudheer Babu, DIG (Prisons) K Keshava Naidu and have rushed to the prison.
The director-general of prisons and correctional services VK Singh has also arrived here during afternoon hours to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to the press persons, Singh blamed the jail break on the lack of sufficient staff. Of the four watch towers one tower was not guarded when the incident took place. Departmental action would be initiated against the jail staff for failing to ensure proper security at the prison.
According to the sources, the prisoners jumped off the wall on the side of Kakatiya Medical College which shared boundary with the prison on left side of the jail’s main entrance.
The CCTVs installed have not covered that area. Meanwhile, several questions were being raised over the efficacy of security features at the prison.
Probe is being launched whether the CCTVs and flood lights were functioning or not and whether power fence was live or not when the prisoners were on the run. On the other hand the police have launched a manhunt to nab the escapees.
