PRRLI LAND ACQUISITION

Nagarkurnool: A group of farmers from Narlapur village of Kollapur mandal staged a protest against the Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation (PRRLI) project works being carried out in their lands without paying the required compensation. More than eight farmers who lost their land under the Narlapur reservoir in Kollapur mandal staged a dharna and blocked the PRRLI works going on in their lands on Monday.

As the State government has taken up the mega lift irrigation project with an aim to irrigate more than 8 lakh acres in four districts (Nagarkurnool, Mahbubnagar, Wanaparthy and Gadwal) of erstwhile Mahbubnagar, more than 24,000 acres of land has been acquired by the government for the purpose. As part of this, Narlapur villagers also gave their lands for the construction of Narlapur reservoir; however, till date eight farmers are yet to get the compensation for their lost land.

Aggrieved with this, a group of farmers blocked the works and demanded immediate payment of their compensation. “We have given our lands in the good hope that everyone will be benefited by the project. However, the officials have not paid the compensation to eight farmers and they are carrying out the construction works in their lands without paying the compensation.

We want the government to compensate adequately first and only then take up the construction works,” demanded the farmers. Earlier the government had paid only Rs 4 to Rs 4.5 lakh per acre, but now, the farmers are demanding Rs 5 to Rs 5.5 lakh. Having learned about the development of farmers’ agitation, Praveen Kumar, DE, PRRLI immediately rushed to the spot and pacified the farmers.

He assured that all those farmers who had not received their compensation would be given their dues as early as possible. He also agreed to discuss about the hike in compensation for the farmers with the higher-ups and said soon they would take a positive decision accordingly. “About eight farmers are yet to get their compensation.

We will soon provide them the required compensation as per the norms and also will discusses the hike demanded by the farmers with the higher authorities and see that everyone gets the best compensation for their lands,” informed Praveen Kumar. Later, the DE discussed the development works of PRRLI with the farmers and explained its importance for the region. In this programme, farmers Satyam, Balepeer, Laxmaiah, Maddileti, Padma, Pedda Maddileti and others took part.
