Hyderabad: Finance Minister Eatala Rajender on Wednesday directed bankers to ensure that the common people were not subjected to difficulties in the wake of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

Rejender expressed concern that the decision to scrap high-value currency notes has adverse effect on various sectors, business and industry. It caused misery for the common people, he said.

At a video conference with bankers and District Collectors at Secretariat here, the Finance Minister directed the officials to see that the poor and the middle class people did not suffer. He asked the District Collectors to ensure that the common man could still use the old notes for transactions till the deadline fixed by the Centre.

He drew the attention of the offi0---­­­++by the people in organising functions like marriages. He suggested that the officials might ensure that sufficient quantity of change was available for people to transact business in old notes.

The Minister made a pointed reference to the problem being faced by contractors in paying wages to the labourers. The labourers were facing difficulty in buying essential commodities on a day-to-day basis.

He asked the bankers to ensure that adequate quantity of small notes was available in the market for hassle-free transactions. He asked the bankers to increase the limit of withdrawals from Rs 4,500 a day and lend loans to small businesspersons. He asked the bankers to give more clarity on depositing Rs 2.50 lakh at one go.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma stated that people can transact in old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes till November 24. “We have asked the officials and bankers to see that these notes are used in open market in a hassle-free manner,” he said.

The government has taken all steps to make payments, pay taxes and any sort of monetary exchanges using high-value demonetised notes. He also asked the bankers and officials to make wide publicity about the availability of funds to avoid panic.
