The construction of tanks and filter beds at various places all over the district has virtually come to a standstill. At some places they are progressing at a snail’s pace.
Karimnagar: The effect of demonetisation reflected on the works of Mission Bhageeratha. In spite of the instructions from the state government to complete the works in time, labourers are not attending to the work refusing to accept the high-denomination notes for their labour. The contractors express helplessness to complete the work by March 2017 as stipulated by the government.
The construction of tanks and filter beds at various places all over the district has virtually come to a standstill. At some places they are progressing at a snail’s pace.
The Hans India personally visited the Mission Bhageeratha at Timmapur in the district where the effect of demonetisation was visible. The tank at Timmapur is intended to provide drinking water to various villages Chigurumamidi and Manakondu mandals apart from Husnabad in Siddipet.
The contract for the construction of the tank was given to Max Constructions which gave the same to some other company on sub-contract. Ministers T Harish Rao and Eatala Rajender issued instructions to the contractors to complete the work by March 2017.
Apart from its own employees, the contractors also engage about 400 local labourers in the work. These local labourers are paid hard cash for food daily and wages weekly. Since they are not even paid daily lunch allowance after demonetisation was announced, they stopped coming to work.
They refused to accept high-denomination notes. Only the company workers are now working at the spot which is negligible. The contractors say that the labourers have refused to accept the new Rs 2,000 denomination note as it is not possible for them to change it. Mainly the work on backwater wash tank and filter bed was going on at a snail’s pace.
Moreover, the note shortage also hit the transportation of construction material to the site. Contractor Prabhakar says that it might not be possible to complete the construction by March 2017, if the same situation continued. He said that the labourers were demanding Rs 100 currency notes which we were unable to give them.
Assistant Engineer Kartik said that the works were under constant supervision and they would have completed in time but for demonetisation. The higher officials were informed about the ground situation, he added.
