Indian Institute of Technology Ropar celebrates its 5th annual convocation
The ceremony was presided over by Prof S K Das, Director and Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson, Board of Governors – IIT Ropar. 130 students were felicitated with graduate and post-graduate degrees.
Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar), hosted its 5th Annual Convocation on Monday, at their campus. Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India was the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation address.
The ceremony was presided over by Prof S K Das, Director and Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson, Board of Governors – IIT Ropar.130 students were felicitated with graduate and post-graduate degrees.
Out of this, 112 graduated in B. Tech and 18 in PhD. Four students also received special awards. Gaurav Mittal, Computer Science & Engg received President of India Gold Medal, Amogh Agrawal, Elec. Engg received Director Gold Medal and Institute Silver Medals were received by Nekkanti Akhil, Mechanical Engg and Amogh Agrawal, Electrical Engg for their outstanding performance during the academic sessions.
Encouraging students to be the next leaders and achievers, Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India said, “21st Century is the century of knowledge and India is strongly investing in higher education to help India’s march towards becoming a major knowledge and economic super power.
The world is moving with an accelerated pace towards technology led economic growth. Thus, the establishment of new IITs has been essential to leverage the demographic advantage to technology led development and growth.
It has been really delightful to see IIT Ropar feature among the top engineering institutions in the country and we hope that IIT Ropar will continue to establish its mark by solving some of the complex challenges that leverage the best of global science for developing locally relevant technology solutions. It has been heartening to see IIT Ropar focus on contemporary national and societal aspirations and priorities.
Whether it be focus on water resources, soil usage, food preservation, soil conservation or bio-medical instrumentation and cancer research, IIT Ropar has shown commitment to cutting-edge engineering education and research.”
“I would also like to congratulate the graduating students and their families for their effort and determination”, he added IIT Ropar being one of the new IITs has been awarded 9thposition in the (NIRF) rankings this year and has also proved to be excellent in teaching and research at an international level. IIT Ropar has also made a mark on its infrastructure and was recently awarded 5 star GRIHA rating for the master-plan of its upcoming campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof S K Das, Director, IIT Ropar said “IIT Ropar is on a path of fascinating growth. For us it has been an exciting year of planning, expansion achievements & renewed hopes.
From its strength of 800 students, it is going to grow to 2500 students within a span of 3 years, with a number of new departments such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering & Material Engineering coming up.
The institute is building a State-of-The-Art campus on the banks of the river Sutlej, with emphasis on Human Resources. It has increased its faculty strength by 50 per cent in the last one and a half years and is going to maintain a ratio of 1 faculty member for every 10 students every year.”
“We are proud to have been ranked 9th among the engineering institutions of the country in the 2016 National rankings conducted by the National Institutional Rankings Framework.
We have also achieved an average citation per paper of 5.96 as per the 2016 SCOPUS data and this is among the highest in the country. The real stars of today are the graduating students and I would like to wish them the very best in their future endeavours as rofessionals, entrepreneurs, educators & researchers,” he added.
