New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday ruled out, once again, any proposal to increase the Assembly Seats in Telangana State before the next census.

Replying to a question from T G Venkatesh, MP, in the Rajya Sabha, here Wednesday, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, stated that the TS government had requested for increasing the seats in Legislative Assembly from 119 to 153.

The issue was taken up with the Ministry of Law and Justice, who in turn sought the opinion of the Attorney General. The Attorney General had observed that as per Article 170(3) of the Constitution, the total number of seats in the Assembly of each State should not be readjusted till after the first census is published post the year 2026.

Therefore, unless and until Article 170 is amended to bring up in line with Section 26, the increase in the number of seats could not be given effect.
