Hyderabad: In a significant step towards transparency, Agriculture Secretary C Parthasarathi on Thursday inaugurated market transactions done through electronic weighing machine linked to eNAM portal for chilli crop at the Malakpet Market yard.

The official also inspected the Malakpet market transactions for onion crop and also the eNAM entries for stock arrivals with details of crop varieties being uploaded by the staff.

He reviewed with traders and marketing officials certain issues relating to the implementation of the eNAM for procurement of chilli crop, which is expected to arrive in the markets at the earliest.

He expressed his view that eWeighing would herald transparency in market transactions.

Traders expressed their problems relating to lack of liquid cash for market operations and payments to hamalis.

The traders requested the Agriculture Secretary to give some relaxation to traders with regard to curbs on drawing cash from banks.

The Agriculture Secretary said he would talk to the bankers having substantial transactions with traders and also arrange for mobile ATM at the market.

He instructed officials to see that farmers were not kept waiting for a long time for procurement under eNAM.

The chilli traders sought sufficient space for drying the crop on arrival in the market. Parthasarathi said that the District Collectors of Medchal and Rangareddy would be contacted for identifying land for establishing a spacious market yard near the Outer Ring Road.

He said during the traders’ bandh from November 15 to 24, the Marketing Department procured onions from Wanaparthy and Jogulamba Districts from the fields of 435 farmers with 221 vehicles, filling 56,598 bags with 28,773 quintals of onion, and sold them to consumers at a reasonable price.

The visit was assisted by Ravi, Hyderabad Regional Joint Director, Marketing, E. Mallesh, Deputy Director, Marketing and Malakpet Market Secretary Rajasekhar.
