Hyderabad: People living in and around Secunderabad Cantonment hope that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) would further extend the use of Gough Road.

The deadline for using the road ends on November 30. People are confident that the date would be deferred until alternate roads are developed.

Citizens’ hopes rose after the news of Telangana Chief Minister’s meeting with the Defence Minister on the issue.

The last time when the due date was May 31 for the closure of Gough Road, the Local Military Authority (LMA) had erected boards about the closure of roads but this time around, there is no sign of boards till date.

Rajeev, a resident of Sainikpuri says, “We hope that the roads would remain and believe that the State government and the Centre are in discussions on building alternate roads.

The last time there were barricades and signboards on the impending closure. Now, we do not see them and that gives us hope.”

In the last couple of months, a survey was undertaken in Medak and Ranga Reddy districts scouting for land to be given to Army for the land that the State government is taking for building alternate roads and expressway from Jubilee Bus Stop to Shameerpet and on Nizamabad highway. According to highly reliable sources, the District Collectors of Medak and Ranga Reddy have identified land parcels and submitted detailed report to the State government.

To ease the traffic problems between Ramakrishnapuram to West Marredpally, the government needs 25-acre Defence land, abutting AOC, Safilguda, for the construction of a new road. With regard to the expressway, the Defence authorities are willing to part with land on condition that the State government allots equivalent land.

In all, the Roads and Buildings Department needs close to 100 acres of land to construct two expressways - one from Jubilee Bus Stop to Shameerpet and the other on Nizamabad highway.

People living in the periphery of the Cantonment hope that the Defence Ministry will once again defer the date for the closure of roads.

B T Srinivasan, general secretary, United Federation of Residents Welfare Association says, “People are positive that the roads would continue to be open and are waiting with bated breath for the announcement from the Defence Minister.

We understand that concrete steps for building alternate roads have been taken and the State government has identified lands to be given to the Army.”

Officials at the Roads and Buildings Department say that a detailed project report on expressways has been submitted to the Defence Ministry and the project will take off once an MoU is signed.
