Warangal (Urban): Not long ago, Pembarthi, a tiny village under Hasanparthy mandal with 2,000-odd population, was like any other village in the region without much to boast on developmental front.

Now they are a bunch of happy people with the development they have witnessed since their village was adopted by the Warangal Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu a year ago.

The results may not be earthshaking but significant enough to catch one’s admiration. And with many more developmental works in the offing, the village appears to be on the right path to emulate Gangadevipally, a model village that has earned worldwide recognition due to its community-based developmental programmes.

When the Commissioner adopted Pembarthi on August 18, 2015, a day after the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao launched the Grama Jyothy programme, aimed at integrated and comprehensive development of the rural areas, the village was riddled with many a problem, especially bootlegging menace.

Up against this, the police chalked out a systematic approach beginning with curbs on the illicit liquor brewing in the village. Soon the villagers came under one roof to impose liquor ban in the village.

To help the youths and draw the attention of idlers from gambling, the police started a library. Not stopping with it, they also provided preparatory classes, christened as Sumarg, to jobless youths.

Now two of them await the final results of Sub-Inspector recruitment test besides eight others vying for constable posts.

The brimming Golam Cheruvu (tank), which was adopted by the Commissioner under Mission Kakatiya adds another feather to the cops’ endeavours. The special emphasis of the CP also brought a BT road connecting the village to Ambala approach road, said to be a vital link.

Inspired by the Commissioner’s efforts, Wardhannapet MLA Aroori Ramesh came forward to bore the expenses of a community hall (Rs 5 lakh) and a mini function hall (Rs 10 Lakh) from his Constituency Development Funds.

The Commissioner and the MLA performed bhumi puja to launchthe construction of community and function halls on Wednesday.

“The journey is long and difficult, we must stay the course as the transformational change will not occur overnight,” Sudheer Babu told The Hans India, referring to the initial hiccups they faced when they tried to bring about a social change in villagers.

Pembarthi sarpanch Saraiah Utukuri said: “We have witnessed a sea of change since our village was adopted by the Commissioner.

Now, neither there is a liquor belt shop nor a person running for liquor in the village.”

Hasanparthy Inspector of Police S Ravi Kumar who looks after the development of the village said that credit goes to the Commissioner who wants to turn the village into a model one the lines of Gangadevipally.
