Hyderabad: Elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation ward committees were held amid high drama on Saturday, with many of the corporators faulting the election process.

While the opposition parties held a dharna prior to the Special Council meeting, corporators from the ruling as well as opposition parties claimed that the GHMC did not consider the proposals sent by them.

The protesting corporators claimed that they were absolutely clueless about the 1,473 ward committee members who were shortlisted out of 5,000 names that had been sent to the corporation.

According to sources in GHMC, the Mayor and his deputy were busy short-listing names of the ward committee members. The list had been changed several times as political considerations gained an upper hand, some of the corporators alleged.

The Special Council meeting, scheduled to begin at 10.30 am, was delayed by one and half hours due to protest by TRS corporators.

The corporators refused to attend ward committee elections since they did not have any advance information on the shortlisted candidates.

The corporators said that it was not proper to ask them to ‘elect the members unanimously’ without prior information.

Some corporators from Jubilee Hills, Rajendernagar, Uppal and Khairatabad assembly constituencies alleged that the corporation did not select even one candidate from the proposals sent by them. However, the matter was sorted out with the intervention of Mayor Bonthu Rammohan.

He had a closed-door meeting with the dissenting leaders and convinced them to participate in the elections.

The Special Council meeting began at 1 pm after condolences to Telangana martyr Kasoju Srikantha Chary and former Shaikpet corporator Sudhakar. The council meeting unanimously elected 1,473 members through voice vote.

The Mayor later announced that the ward committee members for 13 divisions were not elected due to technical reasons (as they did not receive sufficient applications from women candidates).

He said that ward members for 13 divisions Pattarghatti, Nawab Sahab Kunta,Tolichowki, Jambagh, Gunfoundry, Ameerpet, Sanathnagar, Erragadda, Addagutta, Mettuguda, Bansilalpet, Begumpet and Rahmath Nagar would be elected soon.

Congress corporators held dharna at the Mayor’s chambers, while TRS and BJP corporators accused the Mayor of ignoring proposals sent by opposition party leaders.

"The Mayor did not consider the proposals sent by the opposition parties and shortlisted the candidates unilaterally", said BJP corporator G Shanker Yadav.

Congress corporator Netti Shanker Yadav and Shanthi Saizen Shekar Chitipolu raised slogans against the Mayor, accusing him of unfair election. They demanded an explanation from the Mayor.
