Hyderabad: “Focus should be on quality seed production for food security of emerging population and for gaining good yield by the farmer”, said Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Agriculture Minister, at the 5-day workshop organised by TSSOCA in collaboration with ISTA, Switzerland, here on Monday.

The workshop was inaugurated with a National Anthem and lamp lighting by the Minister and the gathering was welcomed by K.Keshavulu, Director, TSSOCA, and the Minister has addressed the gathering and said that the seed sector should concentrate on the production of quality and pure seed as the future is challenging with huge population and less cultivable land.

He also mentioned that in the two years of formation of new state, the Government focused on attaining self sustainability in food grains and also to emerge as a seed bowl of the country.

He added that the state is already meeting 60 per cent seed requirement of the country.

He further said that the state has become the hub of seed companies and its processing units of about 400 and 6 tonnes per hour is processed by these companies.

He also said that the state government has adopted 83 villages under seed village programme and initiated for production of quality seed.

He expressed happiness towards being part of one of the state in certification of seed for marketing in International seed market.

Agriculture Commissioner Jagan Mohan said that the participants can visit the agriculture fields as Rabi season has started and farmers are ready to sow the seed. He said that the two basic important aspects of agriculture is soil health and quality seed for which the Telangana Government is focusing upon.

Eddie Goldschagg, Chairman, Sampling Committee, ISTA and OECD seed expert, South Africa, said the workshop will focus on areas of rules and regulations in seed testing, physical purity, assessment of the seed.

Dr. Keshavulu, Director, TSSOCA in his welcome address said that the workshop includes 33 lectures on seed quality standards and assessment.
