Prof Javeed Alam, former Head of the Department of Centre For European Studies, CIEFL, who is known for his wide range of expertise including the philosophical treatment of modernity, secularism, Marxism  and Communist movement,  democracy as well as politics and the caste system in India, passed away here on Monday at his residence.
​Hyderabad: Prof Javeed Alam, former Head of the Department of Centre For European Studies, CIEFL, who is known for his wide range of expertise including the philosophical treatment of modernity, secularism, Marxism and Communist movement, democracy as well as politics and the caste system in India, passed away here on Monday at his residence.
Professor Javeed Alam, Ph D, was a Professor in Department of Political Science, Himachal University, Shimla. He retired as a Professor from the Centre for European Studies, Central Institute of Foreign Languages, Hyderabad.
His area of specialisation is in Political-Social Philosophy, Indian Politics and Western Studies.He published more than 50 articles in various journals and edited books and authored publications like Dissent and Domination: Peasants and Politics India: Living with Modernity (Oxford University Press, 1999) and Who Wants Democracy (Orient Longman, Tracks of the Time 15, 2004).
He was presently working on a book on Secularism entitled Indispensability of Secularism. He was also part of the First Intellectuals' Delegation to China in 1985, which interacted extensively with the intellectuals of China in Beijing, Shanghai and Canton.
He was active in popular movements fighting for democratic values, human rights, secularism and pluralist traditions of our society.
Professor Alam was a famous name amongst scholars and Left activists in the hill State and would be remembered as a pioneer of initiating the Marxist ideology amongst the students and the academia here.
Prof Alam had taught for many years in the Political Science Department of Himachal University and was actively associated with the Indian Institute of Advance Study, Shimla, and had held academic positions and fellowships at the Centre for Study of Social Sciences, Kolkata, York University UK, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.
He was always involved in the popular movements for democratic values, human rights, secularism and sustaining the pluralist traditions of the society.
He was living with his son in Hyderabad after his retirement from the Centre for European Studies from the Foreign Language University of Hyderabad.
Professor Javeed Alam served as the Chairperson of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. He completed his postgraduate studies from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and earned his Ph D from Jawaharlal Nehru University , New Delhi.
Prof K Nageshwar, Editor of The Hans India, recalling his personal association with the distinguished Social Scientist, described Prof Javeed Alam as an illustrious son of glorious intellectual tradition of Hyderabad.
Despite achieving national and international academic laurels, Prof Alam remained humble and was always intellectually agitated on issues concerning the common man and the constitutional values of Indian democracy, Prof K Nageshwar added.
