All the tall claims of extending the Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS) Phase II to Yadadri notwithstanding, the ground reality is that the project that started with much fanfare in 2014 with an estimated cost of Rs 816.55 crore and was expected to be completed by December 2017 is moving at snail’s pace.
Hyderabad: All the tall claims of extending the Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS) Phase II to Yadadri notwithstanding, the ground reality is that the project that started with much fanfare in 2014 with an estimated cost of Rs 816.55 crore and was expected to be completed by December 2017 is moving at snail’s pace.
With just 45 per cent completed and just Rs 281 crore spent out of Rs 820.55 crore, crestfallen officials of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) who are executing the project seem unhappy and helpless.
Highlights:
- State government released 25 crore out of 525 crore of its share for the project
- With just 45 per cent of the project completed, meeting the December 2017 deadline seems impossible
Their helplessness stems from the fact that the state government which is expected to bear two-thirds of the cost has till date just released a paltry Rs 25 crore out of its share of Rs 525 crore, according to CPM city secretary M Srinivas, who filed an RTI.
“The government is interested only in skywalks and highways. MMTS-Phase II would be beneficial to over 3 lakh people and solve the present traffic jams in the city,” he said. As far as land acquisition is concerned, the contentious 4-km defence land close to Suchitra is still unsolved.
Speaking to The Hans India, P Srinivas, chief project manager, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), said that in the recent ‘pragati meeting’ held on inter-ministerial issues, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) was urged to handover the land to RVNL. “The Local Military Authority (LMA) is waiting for a communiqué from MoD,” he said.
RVNL has yet to acquire 1 acre and 29 guntas of government land, revealed an RTI reply. RVNL is also to acquire land at Mallapur and Yamnampet.
When quizzed about the state government not releasing funds, RVNL officials have been diplomatic than pragmatic and said that they received Rs 60 crore and are expecting another Rs 150 crore in the current financial year.
Under the package-I, quadrupling of track with electrification for the sections between Ghatkesar and Moula Ali (12.20) km and patch doubling with electrification between Moula Ali and Seethafalmandi (10 km) is underway.
Doubling with electrification between Sanathnagar and Moula Ali (22.5 km) and restoration of track with electrification between Telapur and Ramchandrapuram (5.3 km) is covered.
Under package III, doubling with electrification between Medchal and Bolarum (12.35 km) and doubling with electrification between Falaknuma and Umdanagar (12.05 km) is covered.
Noor, general secretary, Suburban Train and Bus Travellers Association, Malkajgiri, said, “The quadrupling of Moula Ali to Ghatkesar from the present two tracks would be a boon to the people of the city but the slow pace of works is a major cause of worry.”
As per the project guidelines, the state government has to foot two-thirds of the cost and if MMTS Phase II is to become a reality, the government needs to immediately release funds, said M Srinivas.
