New Delhi: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur, here on Friday permitted the Telangana government to go ahead with the appointment of the Vice-Chancellors "as per the conditions and regulations" to the three universities which is pending due to litigation.

The appointment of VCs was challenged by Prof Manohar in the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad which imposed a stay on the same.

This was challenged in the Supreme Court by the government which agreed to issue the interim orders in its favour. Later, the state government filed another petition seeking orders to fill up three more posts pending.

Senior Counsels of Prof Manohar, U V Singh and Markandeya argued that the Government was not following the UGC guidelines and hence the recruitment was against contrary to the provisions.

They argued that the state government was not empowered to appoint the search committee as per the Universities Act of 1991 and all the three picked up by the Government to become VCs were not qualified, hence.

Attorney General, Mukul Rohatgi, advancing the Government argument assured the Court that the Government would follow the rules and court directives of the past to fulfill the same without fail.

The bench directed the government to follow rules and complete the process.
