Hyderabad: The tragic deaths at Nanakramguda brought to the fore the humanity of a 40-year-old woman, whose gesture in the hour of grief was extraordinarily noble and came as godsend to the officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Caught in a dilemma over the need to rescue people trapped in the debris, the officials who rushed to spot were faced with the problem of reaching out inside the rubble.

The only logical entry point was through an adjoining ‘house’ that belonged to Anita Bai, a 40-year-old, who has been residing there for over 15 years, along with her cousins.

Recounting the run-up to the incident, she said around 9.05pm, she felt tremors, which made her to come out of her house.

Anita said she saw a heap of dust for at least 30 minutes. By the time it was cleared, the adjacent building had come down. It was after the locals had sent an SOS that the police and GHMC officials came to their rescue.

“After making all possible attempts, the rescue teams asked me for help saying that a room in the two bedroom house had to be demolished so that they could rescue a wailing child and a woman,” she said.

Anita said she did not hesitate a second to ask the officials to go ahead with demolishing her house. That act of kindness gave a fresh lease of life to two-year-old Deepak and a woman Rekha.

To her surprise, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao, who visited Anita's house on Friday morning had assured to reconstruct the demolished structure and asked the GHMC officials to pursue the matter.
