Mahbubnagar: The Chairman of Telangana State Public Service Commission, Prof G Chakrapani, said a unique and unparallel experiment for KG to PG free education is promised and attempted in the new State of Telangana.
He exhorted the teachers' organisations to play a proactive role to ensure that the ambitious scheme is implemented properly in the State. The teachers organisations should exert pressure on the government for speedy implementation of the programme.
At a time when privatisation of education is the policy priority, Telangana talks about expanding education in public stream. The teachers and civil society have to play their due role in this regard.
Prof Chakrapani was the chief guest at the education convention held at Mahbubnagar of the State conference of Telangana State United Teachers Federation (TSUTF).
Expressing concern over growing corporate stranglehold on education, Prof Chakrapani urged the teachers organisations and civil society to evolve an alternative to corporate education.
The residential education in English medium can be an effective antidote to the onslaught of corporate forces, he felt.
Speaking at the meeting, Prof K Nageshwar, former member of the Legislative Council representing the region, said teachers should evolve as public intellectuals to effectively interpret the contemporary developments to the society at large.
V Srinivasa Rao of Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch said that government schools primarily serve the interests of the most marginalised sections of society and emphasised the need to preserve and promote them.
Manikreddy, Vice-President TSUTF, presided over the meeting.
