Hyderabad: As if twisting the knife into the wound, a scheduled bank is making life of a section of its cash-starved customers more painful by its acts of omission.

A group of customers of a largest scheduled bank had the shock of their lives when the receipt they got after withdrawing money from an ATM showed a zero balance.

The customers were at first felt bewildered and then shocked not knowing what to do as the banks declared three-day holiday.

Cash crunch in the city has forced people to stand in queue for three to five hours in front of one or two ATMs from which money can be withdrawn at the rate of Rs 2,000 each.

Narsimha (name changed) on Friday evening withdrew Rs 2,000 from an ATM belonging to Allahabad Bank at Nagole, and his receipt from ATM and SMS from his bank (SBI) showed a zero balance.

He told The Hans India that "I was frightened over this and waited for some more time to make enquiries with other customers of the same bank. Half-a-dozen customers too got the same message on their mobile phones.

Nothing to worry, said a manager at a branch of SBI. On condition of anonymity, he said that there seemed to be technical snag.

“We do receive several complaints from our customers. We promise that their money in their accounts is safe.”
