Hyderabad: The inter-state Tummidihatti project has hit a roadblock as Maharashtra government is yet to finalise compensation to be paid to the displaced persons for land acquisition in Maharashtra. Telangana government had sent a proposal to Maharashtra government requesting them to permit acquisition of 550 acres of land in Gadchirowli and Chandrapur districts. This request has been pending with Maharashtra government for the past three months.

Top officials of the state Irrigation department told The Hans India that after the Chief Ministers of the two states entered into agreements on the construction of three joint projects Tummidihatti, Medigadda and Chanaka Korata, in August this year, the Maharashtra government was requested to finalise the compensation package for the displaced persons in the two districts. The officials had also written several letters but so far, the Telangana government did not receive any communication from Maharashtra government.

It may be mentioned here that the Telangana government had accepted to provide compensation to all displaced at Tummidihatti project site. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 families would be displaced as it required 550 acres of land. Out of which 150 acres would be acquired from the government at river bank.

Telangana government already acquired 750 acres for the project in the home state. The works would be grounded only after the land acquirement is completed. The delay in the execution of works would escalate the project cost which will put burden on the state exchequer, officials fear.

Sources said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to take up the issue with his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis during the first week of January. Officials said that the works at two other projects Medigadda and Chanaka Korata were in progress.

The inter-State barrage is being constructed on River Godavari at Tummidhatti village in Koutala mandal in Adilabad (now Asifabad) district. Under the agreement, Telangana state would construct Tummidihatti project at 148 metres FRL (full reservoir level).

The project would provide irrigation to nearly two lakh acres in Sirpur Kagaznagar, Asifabad, Bellampalli and Chennur mandals in the Adilabad and Asifabad districts. The potential to tap water at Tummidihatti is about 50 tmc ft of water for over 120 flood days.
