Hyderabad: The State government would not compromise on transparency and accountability in the implementation of Mission Kakaitya, according to Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao. This was stated in reply to a question in the State Assembly on Friday. He said steps had been taken to take stringent action against those responsible for irregularities in the rejuvenation of tanks under the Mission Kakatiya phase I and II works.

Claiming that people’s participation was key component in the implementation of the flagship programme, Harish Rao said about six crore trips of silt taken out from the deepening of tanks worth Rs 500 crore had been lifted by farmers during the first two phases. Following good rains in several districts, the tanks were full and this had considerably increased the groundwater level with Medak registering the highest with 15.17 meters.

The Minister said as against Rs 700 crore, the highest amount ever spent by any previous government to rejuvenate the tanks, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government had earmarked Rs 2,590 crore for phase-1 and Rs 3,130 crore for the second phase. Further, the government also decided to have an effective mechanism in place to protect the tanks from encroachments.

For this, it had already collected the data and geo-tagging of about 36,900 tanks had been completed and the remaining would be completed soon, he added. Responding to a question by TDP MLA A Reventh Reddy, the Minister said action had been initiated against officials responsible for irregularities in implementing Mission Kakatiya works in Mulugu.
