Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday rejected the Opposition demand for a CBI probe into the case relating to slain gangster Nayeem, who allegedly had links with top politicians and police officials.

In his reply to a short discussion in the Assembly on ‘measures taken by the government against the criminal activities of Nayeem and his associates and to maintain law and order in the state,’ he said the state police was efficiently dealing with the case and there was no need for a CBI inquiry.

Praising the state police for its efficiency in curbing the crime in the state during last two and half years, the Chief Minister said that it was not the CBI which had encountered Nayeem and booked cases against his associates. He said the police was able to control the menace of Gudumba in the state.

He refuted the charges made by the Congress that the TRS government was saving those involved in the case.

He said that Nayeem had committed those crimes during the Congress rule and it was unfortunate that the Congress was blaming the TRS government for the misdeeds of Nayeem. KCR said that soon after the formation of TRS government, it had decided to contain Nayeem gang's activities with iron hand.

He said he had directed the state police not to spare anyone related to Nayeem case and deal with those guilty sternly. He said the Congress government had failed to arrest Nayeem when he escaped from police custody when he was brought to the court for hearing in 2007.

The Chief Minister said in the united Andhra Pradesh, Eatala Rajender as TRS floor leader had met then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and told him that he was getting threatening calls and that his driver was kidnapped by Nayeem but no action was taken.

Ever since the TRS came to power, KCR said the government had cracked whip against the criminals and as a result the crime rate has gone down. He said that the police tried to nab Nayeem alive but had to fire at him in self defense.

The Chief Minister said the government had constituted Special Investigation Team for a thorough probe into the case. He said that the SIT has enquired 741 witnesses and registered 174 cases. Till date 124 people were arrested for having links with the slain gangster.

He said the investigating agencies have confiscated Rs.2.9 Crore cash, 21 cars, 21 guns, 26 bikes and documents related to 1015 acres land.

The registered value properties, including 1015 acres of land, 27 houses etc is estimated to be over Rs 143 crore. He said that so far two charge sheets have been filed in the court and 15 more would be filed very soon.

Earlier, Deputy CLP leader T Jeevan Reddy accused the government of protecting those involved in the Nayeem case. He said that the slain gangster was involved in hundreds of cases but the government failed to act against those who had links with the slain gangster.

Jeevan Reddy said the CBI probe was necessary as politicians from all political parties were suspected to have links with Nayeem. He wanted the government to produce Nayeem's diary and other material in the court.

BJP MLA C Ramachandra Reddy, TD MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah, CPM MLA Sunnam Rajaiah also spoke on the issue and demanded a transparent probe and strict action against all those involved in the case.
