Hyderabad: National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) and Nasha Mukth Bharat Andolan has proposed to hold a public meeting in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in February to create awareness on the need for prohibition. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Medha Patkar and Swami Agnivesh and scores of other civil society organisations across the country are likely to attend the meeting.

According to Bhupathiraju Ramakrishnam Raju, Member- Advisory Committee NAPM, an analysis of road accidents in 2015 by the ministry of road transport and highways reveal that around 57 accidents and 17 deaths occur on an average every hour. This comes to around 5 lakh accidents and 1.5 lakh deaths in a year. It shows that the State governments are interested only in excise revenue and have shown utter disregard for people’s welfare and their lives, he said.

Quoting WHO study, Raju said between 30 and 35 per cent of the accidents are due to drunk driving. If the Supreme Court orders are implemented in letter then accidents and deaths will be reduced drastically. But the need of the hour is total prohibition and to alleviate poverty and safeguard youth liquor ban the only panacea, he added.
