Hyderabad: In order to improve city sanitation Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to involve private firms to lift dry and wet garbage separately from every household under corporate social responsibility. The civic body has decided to name the initiative as WoW (Wellbeing out of Waste).

The civic body would organise a grand event on Friday to launch the WoW initiative taken up by ITC at LB Stadium at 3 PM. On the same day the GHMC would also kick-start Swachh Sarvekshan programme in which sport stars, film actors, cabinet minister, MPs and MLAs would participate.

About 15,000 people are to take part in the inaugural. Sport stars including Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, PV Sindhu, P Gopichand, along with film personalities Suddala Ashok Teja, Actor Ram, Manchu Laxmi, Tamannaah Bhatia and others will participate in the event.

Nizamabad MP K Kavitha, MA&UD Minister K Taraka Rama Rao, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and others will also participate in the event.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that the objective of WoW would be to inculcate the habit of source segregation of waste into wet and dry waste among the citizens, to recover and recycle dry recyclables like paper, plastic, metal, glass and other materials which go into landfills, to contribute to the conservation of environment by saving trees through retrieving paper and recycling it.

He said that the initiative would also generate employment to the weaker sections of society and create sustainable livelihood to waste collectors and rag pickers. It would contribute to the economy by retrieving valuable recyclables from the garbage and making them available to respective industries.

GHMC commissioner further said that to ensure successful implementation of the WOW Initiative, the civic body has planned the programme in a systematic way.

He said that in phase-I, a door to door campaign would be conducted by resource persons (RPs)/propagation executives to create awareness among the people about the concept of source segregation—separating the dry and wet waste at the household level and explaining its benefits.

He said resource persons will also demonstrate how to segregate the dry and wet waste and each house hold will be given a flyer and a bag to collect the recyclables. Follow up would be done twice to ensure that the household practiced source segregation.

He also said that waste collectors would be trained to collect the dry segregated waste and bring it to the Dry Resource Collection Centres (DRCC) in order to sell the dry recyclable waste.

He said that it would not only ensure the source segregation but also generate income. He said that the wet waste can be converted into compost and supplied to the farmers. He said that the corporation would also seek the help of self-help groups.
