​Hyderabad: Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy on Wednesday said that a proposal for forming a Department of Traffic and Road Safety (DTRS) along with the establishment of 50 highway traffic police stations, for every 50 km on national highways, is under examination of the State government.

Replying to TRS member D Vinay Bhaskar during the question hour Naini said that the government would soon take steps to implement the Supreme Court order of confiscating wine shops along the national highways of the State.

The minister also said that to curb road accidents all unit officers were instructed to launch special drives and take up preventive steps to avert accidents and casualties within their respective jurisdictions and also to book cases under M V Act against road defaulters.

He said that 52,000 were prosecuted under the drink and drive campaign and awareness was being spread among parents with minor children on road safety precautions.

He said that in developed countries there is a separate department for road safety but in Telangana the police was looking after the road safety. He said that the police department was coordinating with other departments such as roads and buildings to avoid road accidents.

TRS member Chinta Prabhakar said that the dividers were not constructed properly which was resulting in accidents. While on the other hand TRS member K Prabhakar said that at many places on the highways there are no vehicle under passages, no safety grills and no service roads resulting in accidents and death of human lives and cattle.
