Hyderabad: The Legislative Council on Wednesday witnessed sparring between the Minister for IT and Municipal Administration K Taraka Rama Rao and Leader of Opposition Mohammed Ali Shabbir over the issue of ‘ex gratia to Telangana martyrs.’

During a short discussion on Agriculture in the Legislative Council, Leader of Opposition Shabbir Ali said the government had not only ignored the farmers but also the martyrs of Telangana movement.

It had promised to pay ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh each but it had given the compensation only to a few. This led to strong protests from the ruling party members.

KTR rebutted the charge and said the Congress party had no moral right to talk about the martyrs. He said it was the Congress party that was responsible for the suicides.

The Congress talking about martyrs was like “cat going on a pilgrimage after eating 100 mice.” He said the Congress had decided to bifurcate the State as it did not have any other option, he added.

He also demanded that the Leader of Oppositon withdraw his statement that “Telangana is Congress biksha” which he had used while initiating the debate.

Even the chairman of the Council Swamy Goud told the member that Telangana State was a result of long struggle by the people of the State and it was not a charity.

Shabbir Ali said the government had completely failed in reassuring the farmers. He said that government had not only failed to help the farmers to get out of their problems but also failed in consoling the families of the farmers who had committed suicide.

When 2,650 farmers committed suicide, the government had only announced that only 750 had committed suicide. Only 350 had received ex gratia of Rs 6 lakhs, he said.

Responding to this, KTR said the government was more concerned about the farmers unlike the previous governments in undivided AP.

He said the credit of giving nine hours of power during day time for agriculture should go to the TS government whereas during Congress regime only two hours of power was supplied.

He said because of the then Congress government’s failure in 2012, a farmer in Yellareddy died while standing in queue for fertiliser.
