The GHMC conducted a preliminary survey and identified that there are as many as 1.2 lakh structures erected on arbitrated lands (constructed unauthorised on private lands, lands under Urban Land Ceiling, Endowment lands, Wakf land and others). The civic body has decided to issue demand notices and levy 100 per cent property tax according GO 299, which was released on Tuesday. The corporation would issue the notices to defaulters who constructed structures on disputed lands.

A senior Revenue Wing official told The Hans India that the GHMC would issue notices to defaulters following the guidelines of GO 299. The official stressed that serving demand notices to defaulters did not confer the ownership of the land or building.
The official further said that the GHMC would serve demand notices from Tuesday and complete the penalty collection by February end. The official said that the civic body would generate at least Rs 150 crore through penalties.

The official made it clear that the civic body would not levy penalties on nala encroachments and structures which were constructed at full tank levels of water bodies. The official said the civic body had been conducting a survey on encroachments which would be demolished once the survey was completed.
