Hyderabad: The arbitrary dumping of debris into the Banjara Lake, despite the fact that Rs 95 lakhs was sanctioned some time back for beautification of the prestigious water body, has raised the hackles of environmentalists and well-meaning circles in the city.

Hectic activity of dumping debris and mud into the lake all through the night of December 25 has been reported so much so that this lake too has now joined the list of threatened ones in the heart of the city. Alert lake champions who had questioned powers that be were simply told that a walking track was being laid inside the lake by GHMC.

The SOUL demanded action against the official who had ordered dumping of debris into the lake. The organisation urged the GHMC to utilise the sanctioned funds for cleaning of the lake, fencing at buffer zone, preventing dumping of garbage, and clearing the inflow channels for storm water to replenish the lake. They also demanded that the dysfunctional Sewerage Treatment Plant be repaired immediately.

As per information with Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), under 'beautification' and 'development' programmes of GHMC, around Rs 95 lakhs was sanctioned for the Banjara Lake towards 'civil', 'walking track', 'lighting' and 'plantation’ works.

According to Dr Lubna Sarwath and Dr Annie Hassan, when SOUL spoke to GHMC Superintending Engineer Sekhar Reddy, he categorically stated that no walking track could be laid around the lake. The lake needed local cleaning and opening of fresh inflows.

He gave an assurance that the debris dumped on Sunday night would be promptly dredged. He also offered to look into the matter.
