Hyderabad: In what resembles a scene straight out of a Bollywood potboiler, five persons posing as CBI officials robbed Muthoot Finance in Ramachandrapuram on Wednesday morning.

The audacity with which the robbers entered the office of Muthoot Finance branch and threatened the employees to gain access to the lockers only to decamp with gold jewellery worth Rs 12 crore made the police suspect the role of insiders in the heist.

The robbers completed their job in less than 15 minutes and left the place after locking the employees in a bathroom, but none of them raised alarm, a police official said.

Opening the office by 9 am is also one of the reasons for the police to suspect the hand of insiders behind the robbery since finance firms and banks are normally opened after 10 am, the official said.

Another reason to suspect insider’s hand in the heist is that the robbers took away the hard disc of the CCTV footage in an apparent bid to not leave any evidence. The police suspect one of the robbers knew in advance where the CCTV footage was being stored and took away that particular hard disc.

However, the police have followed the protocol in launching investigations by forming special teams, alerting the police of neighbouring districts and States besides conducting vehicle search on the Hyderabad-Mumbai National Highway.

Meanwhile, the police also released the descriptive particulars of the robbers. According to them, one robber identified himself as Surjeet Patel and wore a light black or brown turban, light brown shoe, carried a short weapon and spoke mostly Hindi and English. He could be aged around 35 and 40 years.

Another robber initially wore a black mask but removed it later yet wearing a monkey cap. He was around 30-35 years old and grabbed the booty along with another robber wearing a jungle cap, while the third robber was dressed up like a traffic cop with white shirt and light black trouser.

Another robber was in a safari dress, wielding a short weapon and handcuffs but spoke very less, while the fifth robber aged around 45-50 years wore a jungle cap and tucked his white full sleeves shirt.

They took away the booty in three bags – one Sriram Chits orange backpack, one chocolate coloured student bag and one Muthoot black student bag with two elephants logo.

They also had a multi-coloured woolen blanket, police said adding that except one, other robbers were aged between 30 and 40 years and well-built.
