Hyderabad: State Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy has claimed that Telangana is set to occupy the first position in the country in respect of producing solar power within the next six months.

He was responding to a question posed by Congress MLA Vamsi Chand Reddy and Telugu Desam Party MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah during question hour on Wednesday. He said that presently the State had achieved 1000 MW solar power generation capacity and stood second in the country.

  • All 5,084 solar pumpsets are being utilised for agriculture purpose only, he asserts

However, a comprehensive plan had been chalked out to ensure another 2000 MW solar power generation in the State. For this, sub-station-wise tenders had been called. Telangana was poised to be the leading State in the country in respect of solar energy generation within the next six months, he asserted.

The Minister refuted charges of opposition members that the State had been neglecting the agriculture sector by not utilising about 5,084 solar pumpsets allocated for agriculture and drinking water supply. He pointed out that the Centre had allocated solar pumpsets of 5 HP. But, in Telangana farmers utilised 7.5 HP pumps to lift water from a depth of about 500 metres. It was against this backdrop that the State wanted to chalk out a comprehensive action plan to ensure continuous power supply for farmers.

The State government had installed 90 solar pumpsets on a pilot basis at Bangaru Chelaka and Mylavaram in Lakshmi Devipalli mandal of Kothagudem Bhadradri district. Solar power generation was currently at a slow pace in the State, he added.

Vamsi Chand Reddy said that replacing about 18.14 lakh agriculture pumpsets in the State with solar pumps would help save huge quantities of thermal and hydel power. If the power saved was sold to industries, it could fetch about Rs 8,800 crore in revenues to the State and thus the total investment on installing solar pump sets could be recovered within the four years, he said.
