Hyderabad: The Congress party, which had been opposing alleged forcible acquisition of land for Mallannasagar project and had not only organised protests but also opposed the move to amend the Land Acquisition Act in the state Assembly, seems to be leaving the initiative to TJAC chairman Prof Kodandaram at the ground level.

Expressing solidarity to those who are fighting for the rights of the affected people and one or two top leaders participating in the agitations or dharnas organised by the like-minded parties is a common thing.

But on Thursday, almost all the top leaders of T Congress joined the one-day deeksha of TJAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram.

TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Leader of opposition in Assembly K Jana Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, D K Aruna,

Geeta Reddy and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy were among those who attended the deeksha programme and said that they would support Kodandaram in his fight against forcible land acquisition and the amendment to the land acquisition legislation.

This gave rise to speculation that the Congress party would follow the TJAC in the agitation.

When asked if Congress was going to leave the ground level fight to TJAC, TPCC president N Uttamkumar Reddy said that they would extend support to all the agitations organised by TJAC and the Congress on its own will also take up various programmes after the Assembly session was over.

He said this was an issue where all should join hands and fight against the unconstitutional measures being taken up by the government.

The TPCC recalled that their top leaders were arrested while they were on their way to Mallannasagar project site in the recent past. They alleged that the government was suppressing the people’s agitations.

Uttam said that the Congress party had also submitted a memorandum to the Governor but no action was taken. The state government had brought GO123 illegally for paying compensation to avoid implementation of Central Government Act, 2013,” he alleged.

Even though the farmers opposed forcible acquisition of lands, the government threatened them with police force, caned them and suppressed the agitation and was stifling the voice of opposition in Assembly and hence they felt that it was necessary to extend support to all those who take up a fight against the government’s attitude, he added.
