Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is contemplating to install modern electronic toilets (e-toilets) at 17 city locations during phase-1.

According to officials, these public toilets will be modular and pre-fabricated, with user-friendly interfaces for ensuring cleanliness and hygiene.

The phase-I works will be over by January 25. During phase-I, the e-toilets would be installed at major tourism spots, bus-stops, and places where public movement is high.

The project has been sponsored by the State Bank of Hyderabad and the Indian Oil Corporation under their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The e-toilet would be equipped with automatic self-flushing and self-cleaning mechanisms. The unmanned and automated e-toilets would have remote monitoring capabilities and their health status can be tracked through web.

The e-toilets would be incorporated with a full-cycle approach in sustainable sanitation by integrating electrical, mechanical and web-mobile technologies that control entry, usage and cleaning and with remote monitoring capabilities.

Explaining the salient features of the e-toilets, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that they would be power-efficient, have coin-operated entry, on-site waste treatment using anaerobic biodegradation and also consume less water.

The e-toilets do not require regular manual cleaning and maintenance. The corporation would generate revenues through advertisements.

The official said that the civic body had been planning to install e-toilets at tourist spots, including Charminar and Golconda.

Besides, e-toilets would be set up at General Bazaar, Koti Women's college, Gandhi Hospital and in all IT corridors.

The toilets used for men would be procured at the cost of Rs 6.35 lakh each and those for women at Rs 7.30 lakh each.
