Hyderabad: The Telangana State government urged the High Court at Hyderabad to dismiss the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by senior leader of CPI K Narayana seeking CBI probe into the activities of slain gangster Nayeem and his gang.

Terming the petition as publicity oriented, Principal Secretary Home Rajiv Trivedi, who filed a counter affidavit, informed the court that there is no need for a CBI probe as a Special Investigation Team under the leadership of Additional DGP is working vigorously on cases linked to Nayeem gang.

It may be recalled that the CPI leader in his PIL had stated that there are national ramifications as Nayeem had close links with senior police officers across states and also high level politicians.

Only a CBI probe could bring out these linkages and unravel the entire criminal nexus, he pleaded. The Telangana government in its counter affidavit denied that the police had encouraged Nayeem gang.

It stated in the counter plea that around 175 cases are being investigated and police had recovered arms, ammunitions, cars, gold, currency and 121 documents relating to agricultural land and house property.

It also informed that over 848 witnesses were examined as part of the investigation.
