Replying to a question in Legislative Council on the steps government was taking to improve school education, Srihari said the government was spending large amounts of money to improve the basic facilities in government schools. He appealed the legislators to contribute funds from their local area development funds.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the government had released Rs 60 crore for construction and maintenance of toilets in the schools. He said the government was allocating Rs 1 lakh to high schools, Rs 50,000 to upper primary schools. The government had delegated powers to schools to appoint two workers in every school.

Srihari also said the government had already released Rs 235 crore to provide basic facilities in government schools like construction of compound walls, provision of water and power supply, digital classes and other basic infrastructure. He asked authorities to bring to his notice if there were any pending bills for mid-day meal programme and assured of immediate clearance of bills.

The Minister appealed to the MLAs from capital city to donate Rs 1 crore from their constituency development fund to schools development in their constituencies and promised to release matching fund of Rs 4 crore from government for the same. The government would be able to provide enough infrastructure with Rs 5 crore grants in each constituency in the capital, he said.
