Mahbubnagar: The police have resolved to bring down the crime rate in the district with people’s co-operation in the New Year.

Superintendent of Police Rema Rajeshwari told the media here: “2016 was a successful year for the Police Department as the forces in the district worked effectively in reducing the crime rate.

This was possible mainly because of people’s cooperation. Carrying forward the same momentum, we want to further reduce the crime rate in the New Year by working in partnership with people.”

The SP opined that the use of CCTV cameras had contributed in reducing the crime rate in the district. As CCTV cameras had been very useful in tracking accidents cases, theft cases and management of traffic; the district police were planning to set up 150 more CCTV cameras in Mahbubnagar and Narayanpet municipalities.

“Bifurcation of the district has facilitated the police to increase vigil and supervision more effectively. With the reduction of geographical area, we are concentrating on more areas and coming out with innovative programmes like Balyaniki Raksha, Operation Smile etc. to create awarness among children and women about illegal activities prevailing in society.

The district police had become successful in garnering people’s support and had effectively reduced the crime rate,” the SP claimed.

To bring about more transparency and accountability, the Police Department in the district was planning to set up a special branch in the SP’s office which would regularly monitor the recordings of complaints and supervise the investigation of cases in police stations across the district.

The department was also planning to upload the First Information Reports (FIRs). “For uploading the FIRs online, we have completed more than 99 per cent of the work involved.

Very soon all FIRs will be available online and anyone can view the status of their complaints online,” the SP said.

During the past one year, the district police had succeeded in recovering 86 per cent of looted assets and ensured that 42 percent of criminals involved in road accidents were punished.
