Hyderabad: For the first time since 2006 the conjoined twins Veena and Vani spent a night outside Niloufer Hospital.

Brought to the State-run Children’s Home at Yousufguda, the twins, contrary to the apprehensions of how they would acclimatise to the new environment have taken to their new home quite well.

Sunitha, Shanti and Rekha three girls at the home have become close friends already. Rekha, a class 10 student said, “They are cheerful and ask us to turn on the television and even sing songs for us. Vani sang ‘Sanam re’ and when asked how she feels, ‘I am always happy’ she said without batting an eye-lid.

Niloufer Hospital deputed three ayahs for a period of three months so that the children get acclimatised to the surroundings till they become completely comfortable.

Meanwhile the twins have not once asked for their parents. Vijayalaxmi, in-charge head nurse who has been with the twins for the last two years said.

“They have never enquired about their parents.” Speaking to The Hans India, Niloufer Hospital Superintendent Dr C Suresh said, “We tried contacting the parents but the phone is switched off. We left a message.”

Children’s Home in-charge Vijaya Kumari said the children miss the nurses of Niloufer more than their parents. The breakfast was chapati but the kids wanted dosa and vada which was provided.

The children at the home have been visiting Niloufer Hospital for the last two months and the physical setting of the room has been replicated at the home. B Somashekara Amma, State Home in-charge said all the preparations of the last two months are bearing fruit as the kids have taken to their new home quite well.

Their teacher would now be visiting the twins at the home. Presently being taught Class 5 syllabus, the kids did take a simple test on Monday.

The twins enter into another phase of their lives and the first day has gone off without any hiccup. Dr Purnima Nagaraja, consultant psychiatrist, Dhrithi Psychiatric Care, however cautions that the authorities at the home need to be very careful in dealing with the kids as both children have different personalities and behavioural issues need not always manifest in the form of fear.
