Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said that the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) had exposed the failure of TRS government in preventing farmers’ suicides. Apart from it, the report had that the government was responsible for the agrarian crisis in the State.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the TPCC president said, for the second consecutive year, the NCRB had ranked Telangana State in second among the States in suicide rate. This clearly showed that the State government tried to downplay farmers’ suicides, he said.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said these suicides could have been averted if the TRS government had honoured its election promise of waiving crop loans in one go.

The debt-ridden farmers, who voted for TRS in last elections, had expected complete waiver of their crop loans. They became disillusioned as TRS government decided to waive the farm loans in several instalments. On behalf of farmers, the Congress party made repeated appeals to the State government seeking total clearance of crop loan waiver dues. However, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had ignored the appeals made by the Congress party and allowed the situation to deteriorate further.

He further said the TRS government had mishandled drought situation. It failed to enumerate the loss of crops. Both the State and Central governments had failed to extend help to the affected farmers.

He also expressed deep concern over Telangana witnessing maximum female farmers/cultivators’ suicides, accounting for 34.7% of total such suicides in the country.

Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out that in his written reply given on December 26 last year in current winter session, Deputy Chief Minister (Revenue) Mahmood Ali denied reports of suicide by drought-hit farmers in Telangana State.

The State government should come out of denial mode and accept the reality. KCR should clarify whether NCRB figures are wrong, he said.
