Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday said the demonetisation measure by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ruined the country's economy, while pushing every citizen into crisis. He also slammed Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for supporting the note ban though it had shattered State’s finances.
Addressing a rally, which was taken out from Charminar to Gandhi Bhavan, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the demonetisation had turned out to be a surgical strike on small and medium businesses, traders and common people. The Congress party had organised the rally to protest against the pain inflicted on people and the apathy on the part of the government towards the sufferings of common man.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Prime Minister had rushed through the decision of demonetisation without understanding its consequences. He accused Modi of derailing the country's economic growth. The economy was set on growth path during the Congress-led UPA government, he said.
The TPCC chief questioned Modi's silence over 50-day deadline. He said the Prime Minister himself had promised to face any punishment if he failed to relieve people of the hardships of demonetisation within 50 days.
However, he said at the end of 50-day deadline, Modi delivered a disappointing speech and did not even mention anything about lifting restrictions on withdrawals from banks and ATMs. Even after 55 days, there was no change in the situation.
The rally was also addressed by former Union Ministers S Jaipal Reddy and Balram Naik, Leader of Opposition in Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, former PCC Presidents V. Hanumantha Rao and Ponnala Lakshmaiah, former MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, Mahila Congress president Nerella Sharada and others.
