Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has prepared the ground work to demolish as many as 7,072 nala encroachments across the city.

The corporation has so far completed about 70 per cent of the survey conducted in this regard. The rest is likely to be completed within 10 days. According to GHMC officials, most of the nala encroachments have been found in three circles: 3, 10 and 11.

At the next review meeting, the corporation authorities would decide whether to take up on priority basis stretch-wise demolition drive or clear specific bottle-necks that have been obstructing the free flow. Besides, the corporation would increase the buffer zone and pay compensation to all authorised constructions.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the corporation had completed nala survey in about 290-km stretch from a total of 393-km stretch.

The corporation would not only demolish nala encroachments obstructing the free flow, but also increase the buffer zone from 2 metres to 10 metres, depending on the width of the nala.

The corporation would pay compensation to all authorised constructions in the buffer zone and demolish unauthorised structures, after issue of notices prior to the demolition.

The official further said that in order to ensure free flow of nalas, the corporation had decided to take up the de-silting work on an annual basis.

The move would entail additional burden on the civic body to the extent of Rs 30 crore annually. The corporation would invite tenders and finalise them by January end.
