Khanapur: Death of an 80-year-old remand prisoner on Saturday sparked a series of protests by his relatives on Sunday holding the police responsible for his death.

The deceased was identified as G Mangya Naik (80) of Kista Naik Thanda in Pembi mandal of Adilabad district. The police arrested Mangya Naik in connection with a case on Friday and later he was sent to Adilabad jail on remand.

The same night his health condition deteriorated. He was immediately shifted to RIMS at Adilabad where he later died while undergoing treatment. His relatives along with others held the police responsible for the death.

They staged dharna in front of Pembi police station, Khanapur Tahsildar office and later, at the Telangana cross roads.

They demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 15 lakh to the bereaved family and immediate action against the Pembi police.

They burnt the effigy of Pembi sub-inspector Sanjeev and threatened to step up their agitation if action was not taken against the SI and constables.

However hard the circle inspector Naresh Kumar tried to pacify them, they did not relent.

They threatened to continue with their agitation even on Sunday.
