Hyderabad: The Telangana government has successfully brought about 10,000 hectares (ha) under drip irrigation for SC,ST and general category farmers during the past two and half years.

According to officials, the government, which had set a target of covering 1,33,535 ha of irrigation land by 2016-17, achieved 97,584 ha till December 2016. After formation of Telangana, the government has been promoting the micro irrigation project as its flagship programme, under which drip and sprinkler systems are supplied to farmers on subsidy basis.

Before the formation of Telangana, Micro Irrigation Systems (MIS) were sanctioned to a maximum extent of 1 acre with subsidy ceiling of Rs 1 lakh per farmer. The Telangana government announced maximum subsidy of Rs 6 lakh per farmer.

“To achieve this, in addition to Central and State government budgets, an amount of Rs 874 crore has been borrowed from NABARD totalling up to Rs 1092 crore in one year to cover an area of 3.15 lakh acres under micro irrigation,” said a top official of the Agriculture Department.

Under this scheme, the SC and ST farmers are provided with 100 per cent subsidy; the subsidy is 90 per cent for small & medium farmers as well as BC farmers, and 80 per cent for others.

During the past 3 years, Micro Irrigation Systems (drip and sprinkler) were supplied and installed in 2.37 lakh acres, involving an amount of Rs 758.32 crore. A total of 10,900 ha (SC), 12,639 (ST) and 74,046 (general category) farmers were covered during the past three years under the drip irrigation programme.

The government released an amount of Rs 405.85 crore
under the scheme.

“The Union government appreciated the implementation of the micro irrigation programme by the State government at the review meeting held in the month of November and advised other States to study the implementation of the programme,” the official said.

As part of the training process, beneficiaries are being exposed to fertigation technique, acid treatment and maintenance of the system at the nearest field.

Study material, including the agronomic practices of major crops in the district, fertigation schedule and water requirement for crops, is prepared in consultation with
scientists at grama sabhas.
