Hyderabad: The Labour Commissioner has deftly handled the threat by the Telangana Mazdoor Union (TMU) to organise strike in the TSRTC on the Sankranti eve. The recognised union has threatened to go on strike, demanding payment of salary arrears and festival advance to the staff. The strike, if happened, would probably have caused widespread disruption in travel plans of people on the eve of the festival.

The Labour Commissioner persuaded them to defer the strike and promised to hold a meeting to discuss their demand after the festival. He has in fact called for meeting with the unions and the TSRTC management on January 17. The TMU leaders among others demanded payment of salary arrears and leave encashment arrears between 2012 and 2016. The union leaders recalled that the TSRTC management had entered into an agreement with the unions in May, 2015, for payment of 50 per cent of arrears in the form of bonds with 8.75 per cent interest.

TMU General Secretary K Raji Reddy said the government had treated the strike period of Sakalajanula Samme as paid leave for government employees and Singareni employees, but the same benefit was not extended to TSRTC though they too had played an active role in the strike. The workers also demanded that the government cancel contract and outsourcing system and provide promotions and fill the vacant posts.
