Hyderabad: B-Tech and M-Tech students are predominant in a batch of 100 selected for government- sponsored coaching for Civil Services targeting minorities.

At least 60 of the selected students have graduated in professional courses, including engineering and medicine. All these students will now get free coaching in any of the city’s three top institutes known for providing high quality coaching for Civil Services examinations.

A total of 15 M-Tech students and four MBBS graduates are also amongst those who would be competing for the Civil Services Examination-2017.

Representing the first batch, these 100 students being sponsored by the government include 33 girls and three physically handicapped persons. “These students were selected on the basis of merit in a screening test plus 25 % weightage depending on marks obtained at the degree level.

Another prerequisite was that the total annual income of parents should not exceed Rs 2 lakh,” said Syed Omer Jaleel, secretary of Minority Welfare Department. Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, who handed over allotment letters to the candidates on Thursday at the Secretariat, described this as a unique scheme, considering that the government was making efforts to overcome the under-representation of Muslims and other minorities in IAS and IPS.

“The CM wants the Muslims to get these positions through competitive examinations. If Muslims are selected in IPS and IAS, they could ensure proper implementation of welfare schemes for Muslims,” he said.

The Centre for Educational Development of Minorities (CEDM), headed by Prof S A Shukoor as Director and based at Nizam College, is implementing the scheme on behalf of the government. It will be spending Rs 1.5 lakh to 1.6 lakh per student as part of the coaching.

A K Khan, Advisor to Government (Minority Welfare), said that a search committee constituted to identify the best coaching institutions zeroed in on Hyderabad Study Circle, R C Reddy IAS Study Circle and Brain Tree.

He cautioned the candidates to put in sincere efforts for realising their dream of becoming an IAS or IPS official. “You will be competing for 500 seats at the national level, as the remaining 500 are reserved.

A total of 9.63 lakh apply for these examinations, which is difficult to crack. I clearly asked the institutes to drop any non-performer during the course of coaching,” he cautioned.
