Rangeela twist to Swachh Hyderabad
Literally adding colour to the Swachh Hyderabad initiative, field staff of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staff have adopted ‘rangoli’ as a tool to drive home the message of cleanliness and sanitation over three days of the harvest festival, starting with the auspicious Boghi.
Colourful drive to discourage dumping of garbage
Hyderabad: Literally adding colour to the Swachh Hyderabad initiative, field staff of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staff have adopted ‘rangoli’ as a tool to drive home the message of cleanliness and sanitation over three days of the harvest festival, starting with the auspicious Boghi.
The traditional practice of ‘rangoli’ has come in handy for the civic body to effectively and graphically reduce open garbage dumps across the city, with the ground level staff as well as corporators descending on various vulnerable points, right from the crack of dawn, to make rangolis as a way to discourage dumping of any kind.
GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammoham, his deputy Baba Fasiuddin and several corporators on Friday took part in the Swachh initiative of the civic body that had a rangeela touch.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy appealed to VIPs as well as district collectors, judges, media persons and others, to participate in the Swachh initiative to make Hyderabad the cleanest city.
He appealed to citizens to take part in the Rangoli initiative during the three-day harvest festival in order to improve sanitation across the city.
Janardhan Reddy said that GHMC had managed to eliminate several open Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs), though a few of them did make a comeback due lack awareness and co-ordination between the ground level staff.
The corporation had managed to eliminate as many as 1,116 GVPs as part of its 100-day action plan last year. He mentioned that GHMC had decided to conduct a comprehensive study on the re-emergence of VGPs in all circles.
A preliminary study had revealed that open dumping had been found mostly near transformers. Janardhan Reddy said that he would scrutinise sanitary officials at the ground level and address the factors responsible for open dumping.
