Hyderabad: The new BJP city president MLC N Ramchander Rao will take charge on Monday. The BJP, which has 24 seats in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, feels that being a senior and non controversial leader, Rao would be able to ensure that the BJP would increase its seat position in 2019 elections.

According to party sources, the BJP leadership wanted a leader who was acceptable to the entire rank and file for the post of the city president.

There are 24 Assembly constituencies in Greater Hyderabad limits and the TDP-BJP combine could win 14 seats (TDP nine and BJP five) in spite of the TRS wave during 2014 elections. This time the BJP wants to capture the seats of the TDP whose members crossed over to the TRS.

The party leadership, sources said wanted to bank on the clean image of Ramchander Rao. He being a leader who can mingle with the cadre and is easily accessible to everyone who goes to meet him, the party feels that would be able to encourage and enthuse the party leaders to strive hard.

The other second line leaders who wanted the post would not hesitate to work under Ramchander Rao, said a senior leader.

The party had announced the State committee in November but did not announce the city president. Later, after consultation with the senior leaders, the party president K Laxman announced the name of Rao as city president.

Ramchander Rao is presently representing as MLC elected from Graduates Constituency of Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahbubnagar. Rao would be taking charge as city president on Monday at RTC Kalyana Mandapam.

Union Laboru Minister Bandaru Dattatraya, State BJP president K Laxman, BJLP leader G Kishan Reddy and other MLAs would also attend the meeting.
