Mahbubnagar: District Collector Ronald Rose said on Tuesday that teachers in schools and lecturers in colleges must play a vital role in educating students on road safety, especially by organising frequent awareness programmes on accidents and preventive measures.

At a programme organised for commemorating the 28th Road Safety Awareness Week 2017 at ZP grounds here, he observed: “Excess speed and lack of self control among the drivers are the major cause of accidents on roads.

Every driver must and should have driving licences. They should drive on roads with utmost care and must gauge the width and traffic, before accelerating their vehicles,” advised the Collector.

The Collector said that installation of technological aids such as CCTV cameras had helped curb accidents. “One CCTV camera is performing the job of 100 policemen.

All the major junctions on the national highways and state highways have been equipped with cameras and the police force is effectively managing the traffic and avoiding a lot of accidents,” observed the Collector.

Presently 16 dog squads were being engaged in the district to hunt for offenders involved in road accidents and other crimes.

The major junctions where a lot of accidents occurred on NH 44 included Balanagar, Rajapur, Mudireddy pally, Kaurampeta, Jadcherla, Bureddypally, Janampet, Kandur, and Addakal. Every year thousands of accidents were being recorded at these junctions, he said.

The Collector said that children and senior citizens were more prone to accidental deaths because they were the ones who often failed to gauge road traffic properly. The Collector advised drivers to avoid excess loading of passengers and goods as a way to avert accidents.

“The most important aspect observed in drivers is lack of self control. Many drivers deliberately defy signals and some even go for drunken driving which is most dangerous,” observed the Collector.

Bhaskar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Seetaiah, DVP Raju and circle inspectors later took out a rally along the road to spread road safety awareness.
