Hyderabad: The proposal to introduce a bill to give 12 per cent reservations to Muslims in the budget session was opposed by the BJP in the state Assembly as well as the Legislative Council.

BJP floor leader in the Assembly G Kishan Reddy said his party was opposed to reservations based on religion and Telangana government’s efforts to give 12 per cent reservations to the Muslims would not stand legal scrutiny.

Stating that the issue was already under the purview of the Supreme Court, Kishan Reddy said that the decision of the erstwhile government in combined Andhra Pradesh to give 4 per cent reservations to the Muslims was struck down by the full bench of High Court.

Moreover, Kishan Reddy said that the government should not bring in a bill on an issue which was sub judice. He further said that BJP was also opposed to reservations to Dalit Christians as it would encourage mass conversions.

Kishan Reddy said that his party was not opposed to the development of minorities and suggested that the reservations be given on the basis of economic backwardness of various communities.
The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao clarified that there was no bar on the government to bring a bill on any issue that was sub judice.

Earlier in the legislative council, BJP leader N Ramachander Rao questioned the rationale and legal mandate of the government on coming up with a proposal to give 12 per cent reservations to Muslims. He said that if the government wished to extend reservation, it can be done only on the basis of backwardness and not on religious grounds. Rao held that the government was misleading the people in the name of reservation to protect its vote bank.

Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali said that reservation to Muslims was being extended only to uplift the backward amongst them and would be applied only in specific areas.

MIM and Congress said the proposed reservations were in no way connected to the religion. Only economically and socially backward people would be benefitted from the reservations.
