Hyderabad: As part of modernisation of existing medium irrigation projects to reduce the huge gap between original and existing ayacut, the State government has decided to forward a list of projects to Central government with a request to incorporate in the proposed new scheme ‘Bridging of Irrigation gap Ayacut’ in this year’s budget.

Replying during question hour, the Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that since the farmers in periphery were facing problems to irrigate their crops, the government has listed nine projects. He said that even though the State government was making efforts to reduce the gap, the Central government’s scheme would help as it would provide expertise and funds in this direction. “Engineers are getting ready with the proposals to be forwarded to the Central government,” he added.

The Minister further informed that for the 11 ongoing projects with an estimated cost of Rs 7,669 crore under Prime Minister Krishi Sinchai Yojana, the Central government has released Rs 537 crore out of a total Central Assistance of Rs 1,196 crore. The balance amount of Rs 6,473 crore will be provided through NABARD.

But since the Central government is extending the loan under FRBM limits, the State has expressed objection over it and asked it not to be covered under FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management). “Since some schemes are already formulated by us, we asked the Centre to not to cover under FRBM and the decision is pending with the Central government on these projects,” he added.

Harish Rao also said that these 11 projects will be covered under CADWA (Command Area Development & Water Management), which means the Central government will provide an additional grant of Rs 1,000 crore as 50 per cent guaranteed by it, out of total of Rs 2,000 crore needed for this, which is under examination of CWC (Central Water Commission).
